Breathe Me In

I wrote this song after a huge inward battle about how much I had “given up” to follow Jesus. A good friend smiled at me and said something to the effect of “well, what did you expect? You’re following Jesus”.

I felt like he sang this in his kindness over me to describe how close he was to me.

“Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you” – Psalm 116:7

Little feet dancing in the secret hiding place
Only I can see you now, nothing is in the way
Every day I marvel at the way that you have grown
You ask for bread, I’ll give you bread, I won’t give you a stone

Little songs in the night always make me look
My heart explodes with love for you, it’s written in that book
Sometimes when you read the pages the enemy attacks
Then you’re angry that I’m silent and provoke me to react

Come on now, you are old enough to tell your soul

Breathe me in
And remember the promises I made you
Breathe me in
And remember the promises I gave you

Little hands working underneath the midday sun
Pouring out your best to say ‘God let your kingdom come’
But why these tears? Why that face? If you’re tired come to me
Stop earning my approval, you already have it don’t you see?

Come on now, you are old enough to tell your soul
I am proud, you are old enough to tell your soul

I desire to establish you with love and joy and peace
To have a sense of purpose and be walking in my will
I want you to be satisfied and have hope for your life
Like Jesus be obedient, filled with power from on high

Come on now…
